AAEOY Speaker Series

AAEOY (Asian American Engineer of the Year) is an annual recognition event hosted by CIE/USA on the national platform to honor the most distinguished Asian American professionals with their leadership, technical achievements and remarkable public services.

AAEOY was first introduced in 2002, with a total 304 awardees to date.  The awardees have served as role models and sources of inspiration for the STEM community.  Past awardees included Nobel Laureates, academic scholars, key corporate executives, and an astronaut!

During the Covid 19, AAEOY committee decided to invite past awardees and other distinguished industrial/business leaders to share their technical knowledge and experience and interact with the audience in the AAEOY Speaker Series.

Fireside Chat over Zoom:   Entrepreneurship and Social Service

Speaker:  Limin Hu, PhD, co-founder and CTO Emeritus of Ellie Mae, Former Chairperson of the Board of FCSN (Friends of Children with Special Needs)

Dr. Hu will share in the fireside chat his experience in entrepreneurship building the unicorn Ellie Mae that leverage high tech to the mortgage market, while also actively participating in FCSN (Friends of Children with Special Needs), a non-profit organization with over 100 employees.  He is now an active investor and startup advisor.  His unique and broad experience will stimulate us in our career development, integration of high tech with incumbent markets, work-life balance, and the importance of social service.

Introduction of the Speaker Dr. Limin Hu

Dr. Hu has extensive start-up experience for both profits and non-profits.  Dr. Hu started his career with IBM’s T. J. Watson and Almaden Research Centers. At IBM, he developed advanced technologies in networking, systems architecture, multimedia software, and database management. In 1994, Limin became a vice president and general manager for Teknekron Corporation, a large systems development company in Silicon Valley. After Teknekron, he started several entrepreneur ventures including co-founding a FinTech company Ellie Mae in 1997, focusing on a SaaS and cloud solution to automate the US mortgage industry. Ellie Mae went public in 2011 (NYSE: ELLI), and was named the best performing IPO of a US technology company since the financial crisis by Wall Street Journal in 2016.  Ellie Mae has more than 1,000 employees and processes one-third of mortgage volume in the US.

In 2001, Dr. Hu led a fundraising effort to raise $3M to build an FCSN (Friend of Children with Special Needs) Center in Bay Area, and became the first Chairman when it started operation. FCSN now has more than 100 employees, and serves hundreds of children and adults with Autism, Down syndrome, etc.

Dr. Hu received a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from National Taiwan University and a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from the University of California at Berkeley.
